We are excited to announce the Keynote Speaker for the McMullan Writers Workshops 2024 is acclaimed journalist and memoirist Casey Parks!
Casey Parks is an award-winning reporter whose debut book, Diary of a Misfit: A Memoir and Mystery is the story of her life-changing journey to unravel the mystery of Roy Hudgins. Winner of the 2021 J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award from the Columbia School of Journalism and Harvard’s Nieman Foundation, Diary of a Misfit is Parks’ effort to answer her grandmother’s questions about what became of Roy, and her own attempt to find her place in the world. Diary of a Misfit was selected a Best Book of 2022 by The Washington Post and Kirkus.
Parks covers gender and family issues for The Washington Post, and previously spent spent a decade as a staff reporter at The Oregonian, where she wrote about race and LGBTQ+ issues and was a finalist for the Livingston Award. Her articles have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Oxford American, ESPN, USA Today, and The Nation.
As an alumnus of Millsaps College, we are excited to welcome Casey back to her alma mater for the 2024 McMullan Writers Workshops! Her Keynote Address will be free and open to the public, so mark your calendars for 6pm Monday, June 24 to join us.

If you haven’t yet signed up to write with us at the McMullan Writers Workshops this June 24-29, visit our website to sign up for the middle school (rising 8th and 9th graders), high school (rising 10th graders through rising college first-years), and adult writers, be sure to do so soon! Our “earliest bird” discount is active through Monday, April 15. Residential options are now available for all three workshop cohorts!
